THE KING AND I (1999)

4/10/99

Imagine The King And I as retold, and reinterpreted, by the folks who brought you Speed Racer....

If you've never had the pleasure of watching a Speed Racer cartoon, suffice it to say that this version of The King And I retains only the songs from the original material. It has animation that ranges from adequate to awful, ridiculous subplots, offensive ethnic and cultural stereotypes, and worst of all, a lot of cutesy animals that serve no purpose in the movie other than to add kid appeal. As if this story needed more kid appeal....my four-year-old daughter liked both the play and the original movie much better.
